The Surprise entry into my top 3 is a highlight machine with a high motor and impressive stats to back it up. PRO: It would be hard to not start with the insane pressure Caleb puts on the rim. 84th percentile in unassisted rim makes per 100, 84th percentile in rim assists per 100, 97th percentile in rim attempts per 100, and 84th percentile rim efficiency. Its simple really, he gets you looks at the rim, he finished them efficiently and he can do it any way you need him to as a passer, in transition, in the post, as a roller, in the dunker spot, as a cutter. Literally every way but really in isolation or much handle work, something I will get to later on. And there's not really any debate on if that will translate he is a superior athlete he just goes over you, he dunks from spots and positions you quite literally wouldn't view as possible until you see Caleb Wilson play. This high rim pressure and aggressive attacking plays comes with an added advantage of high free throw numbers. A FTR in the 96th percentile, efficiency needs vast improvements but getting to the line gets you easy points and consistent offence. In combination with that general functional athleticism is a huge pro to Caleb's game he's a tier 1 athlete. Future improvements in size would be great but he's so unbothered with physicality at the rim anyway. His mid-range game is also very interesting, strong percentage, high attempts at 85th and 77th percentiles respectively but it's a very smooth jumper with so much height he just doesn't see contests. Really useful tool for further offensive usage. The playmaking has been maybe the most surprising thing to me. He is really amazing at drawing a double out the post and finding the open man similar to how Collin Murray-boyles did in his tape last year one of the more intriguing parts of his offensive game he makes great reads in these situations, does need some improvements off the dribble but again I will get to that later on. 85th percentile AST% combined with 77th percentile AST/TO he's proven to be an efficient playmaker with intriguing point forward potential and post playmaking skills. Caleb Wilsons high motor really shows up in the rebounding numbers. 91st percentile OREB% really shows up in the tape high number of put back dunks thats efficient easy offence where he utilises how athletic he is and does the small things like crashing that make big impacts on the possession game. Defensively he's got great potential, he's not perfect it's not particularly tame but sticking to the positives almost 3 stocks a game. 86th percentile STL% and 81st percentile BLK%. 96th percentile STK:FOUL. He's undeniably an elite defensive playmaker. Elite weak side rim protecting forward and just using his functional athleticism to make an impact on that end. I also want to commend how good he is at communicating, commanding the defence he does a lot more to aid his teammates than most at any level. CON: Biggest glaring issue is the perimeter shot, I actually really like the form a lot although he has a tonne of variance in his lower body but generally mechanics are very smooth. However he's 10th percentile in percentage and 12th in attempts for all intents and purposes this guys pretty much a non shooter of the ball. In combination with that his low FT% at 35th percentile makes it fairly difficult to say he's got better shooting touch than he's shown. Personally, I don't take shooting percentages like 3P% too far into account in projecting to the NBA, we get so many players who develop in to good shooters and Wilson while he doesn't have a good FT% he does have good touch in the mid range but maybe you argue the validity of that with his FT%. Basically I struggle to find a reason to project him to be a perimeter shot maker outside of his smooth shot form, I highly doubt there will ever be a moving 3 point game developed but I wouldn't be overly surprised if he is efficient off the catch at a point in the NBA. I eluded to this earlier but really Wilson is "bagless" his handle really is a weak point in his game. I struggle to see his half court self creation outside of post up opportunities which you'd probably like to avoid slowing down the game. It would be nice to see advantage creation through Wilsons handle being a developed skill in the NBA. This could also help him add to his passing game, point forward potential as a ball handler. And then finally there's a lot of defensive discipline issues with Wilson that he can make up for with his outlier athleticism on the defensive end but in the NBA it gets harder to do that. His closeouts can be wild and his technique around the rim has issues. This is an area of his game that if he wants to hit his max potential as defender which is perennial all defence team member he needs to iron out and generally I think he will be able to solve that. NARRATIVE:BREAK_INTO_THE_BIG_3?: Issue: - Entering this season there was a perceived top 3 in this class and it looked like no one could touch them but Wilson from game 1 of college challenged that theory. Is it crazy for him to break that big 3? To me? no. Not at all and with the production of Wilson and his functional athleticism plus playmaking tape the sky is the limit for this guy. he's 100% the type of prospect you should debate top 3 or 1 in this class. I have Wilson over AJ and some of thats worries in AJ's game but most of its because Wilson has been so strong on both ends of the court that truly I value his versatile two-way game over AJ's elite heliocentric offensive play and I often debate wether I would take Wilson over Peterson and even Boozer because there are real outcomes he is better at the NBA level than those 2. You should always question your truths when there's a challenger because things don't always stay true. PROJECTION: When I watch Wilson's film, when you review the stats, when you look at projections, models etc. I come to the conclusion there's absolutely no reason why this guy cant be 3, 2 or 1 in this draft he is a superb talent and anybody telling you its wrong for you to think that is being ignorant. If he's the best player from this draft in the decade it isn't any outlier development or production that you couldn't have guessed from his tape we all just didn't do our job this guy has the talent, he has it all to make that argument today. Im projecting him as a Scottie Barnes type of player, Scottie was someone I heavily believe should be an All defensive team member this year he's a guy who has All NBA really in reach even if it isn't this year. I think the uses of Wilson at the next level are gonna be fairly parallel to Barnes the swing is really how he can stack his scoring on top of that I think there's real potential for him to go rim centric or be a better perimeter shot maker than Scottie and separate himself that way. Either way this guy is tier 1.
