A zero motion wasted, speedy guard with equal value in quick twitch athleticism as he has in shooting talent. Darryn is ridiculously quick both north/south going to the rim, and east/west sprinting into DHO's. He's insanely light on his feet and does an excellent job existing on and off the rock, which brings immense value to NBA teams. He boasts even better defensive upside I would argue, because his physical profile combined with his anticipation skills makes for a promising weapon at the POA to pressure handlers, slide with them and force turnovers, a la a Cason Wallace. EXECUTIVE_SUMMARY: BEST FIT - PACERS/PELICANS/JAZZ, but really any My thinking here is just high tempo teams who could use an injection of halfcourt scoring and ball pressure to grease the wheel a little bit. There are playmakers already on these teams to take some onus off as well. If he's drafted to say, the Kings or Nets, I think the shooting and defense will outweigh any potential slippages he may experience developing on the ball early on. OFFENSIVE_EVALUATION: Darryn's elevator pitch is just that he is an amazing shooter on and off the ball with a lightning quick release. He has access to his shot pocket whenever he wants and can create serious momentum on his shots by using his teammates screening. The passing is average, 39th %ile in AST rate. He's not really looking to dish but sometimes his shooting gravity or standstill burst creates passing windows. -Major willingness/confidence to pull from deep and stretch the coverage -Harder to shrink the floor against Darryn bc he's 6'6 -Suppresses his turnovers very well for a high usage (30.9%) guard -Encouraging unassisted profile in the halfcourt -Runs into catches/DHO's very well. No wasted motion into jumpers -Super adept at curling screens, able to square quickly and rise up -Sky high FTr indicates the functional strength and solid drive game DEFENSIVE_EVALUATION: Maybe the best defender in the class in terms of anticipating actions and events without fouling. Darryn's going to showcase immediate defensive value on day 1 in the NBA by disrupting commonplace sets, getting into guards and being super physical. -Pokey on defense -Very anticipatory -Offers some but limited rim protection value as a guard. Really depends how much the scheme asks him to. -Speaking of scheme, I think Darryn in a no-middle in the NBA would be pretty seamless given his +5 WS...executing things like mirroring the handler driving baseline or icing side PNR. PROJECTION: Darryn would go 1 in a ton of drafts and I could see the justification for him going 1 in this one. I have him 2 on my board behind AJ. He projects as an awesome guard who will probably be a perennial All-Star with chances to make All-Defense as well. The rumors about his passion to play and grit with regards to injuries...I wouldn't buy much of that.
