Record-breaking freshman producer that projects as the ultimate scalable offensive efficiency hub STRENGTHS: -Only 18 years old, but between his strength, overall build, processing, and polish, he looks like a 10 year NBA vet -Historically productive prospect. Broke Zion Williamson’s Freshman BPM record -Shot quality cheat code for the team. Duke with Cam OFF: Dribble Jumper Freq.: 7.3/100 (96.4%ile), 0.41 ppp (0.5%ile). Cam ON: Dribble Jumper Freq.: 3.7/100 (37.5%ile), 1.08 ppp (98.9%ile) -Very comfortable post-operator. Bevy of moves, good decision-maker when doubled. Punishes smaller mismatches here -Growing face-up game with nice gathers and strength creation downhill -Really versatile hub; post-ups, screener, DHO operator, faceups, ball-handler. Very scalable -Excellent finisher off of two feet. Good touch, uses strength and polish to get good positioning -54.2% free throw rate, gets to the line a ton with his physical nature and ability to get guys jumping -Physical screener that can make passes & attack off the short roll catch, as well as pop for threes -39% three point shooter on nearly 4 attempts per game. Comfortable stationary shooter with good touch indicators. Most attempts from above the break -In love with his shot diet. Threes, free throws, and close two’s. Super relentless. Incredible 66% true shooting -Super high feel playmaker. Passing chops off the dribble, out of the post, short roll, and right off the catch. Excellent at skips to the weakside corner -Absurdly great outlet passer. Really nice skill to pair with his rebounding -High impact rebounder. Doesn’t have a crazy vertical, but his strength, sticky hands, and willingness to box out more than make up for it -Smart defender that hardly breaks down in rotation -Active hands on defense (79th percentile steal%) WEAKNESSES: -Underwhelming athlete for such a highly touted prospect -Think his athletic limitations hurt his standstill self-creation. Lacks the burst to clear defenders hips. Pretty much strength creator only when going downhill right now. So many of these reps stalled out for him -Finishing (particularly off drives) will be impacted by athletic traits limiting body modifications he can access. Outside of finishing off of two feet with spins, bumps, and pump fakes, what does he have? -Fairly slow/robotic three point shooter. Relegated to almost all static spot-ups, outside of an occasional off the dribble attempt. How functional is it vs contests? -Wish he was more assertive as a scorer. Hesitant at times, especially from mid-range/in-between game (granted Duke's offense does heavily lean away from these looks) -His heavy reliance on operating off of two feet really limits his ground coverage and rim protection -Struggles getting over screens and chasing off-ball actions -Lapses defending the ball in space, opening his hips and struggling to stay attached laterally PROJECTION: The #1 player on my board. The spreadsheets tab Boozer as an all-time freshman producer, and his film showcases the bevy of ways he impacts each game. Relentless finisher & rebounder, elite passer, frequent charity stripe visitor, a more than capable shooter from distance, and a willingness/ability to wear just about any hat you can imagine offensively. I will say, I'm *a little* concerned about Boozer's scoring translation (relative to the fact that he's #1 on my board in a very good class). His standstill creation reps were a real struggle at Duke. Boozer hardly ever cleared a defender's hips when slashing due to his lack of burst. He constantly just looked to tap into his strength creation via bumps, which a) he'd miss open lanes to just get downhill and finish, and b) it makes him a one-trick pony. And despite his incredible efficiency around the basket, I do wonder how his finishing as a slasher will look given he attempts more contested looks in this context, and lacks the athletic traits to access different body modifications when driving & finishing. And although I'm not nearly as worried about his shot as others, he's really just relegated to static spot-ups + simple otd/movement, and isn't an aggressive jump-shooter into contested windows. He's not going to be getting run off the line or tapping into countless pull-ups, making life as a slasher even harder. I want to pivot this conversation though, because Boozer will still be an efficient 20 PPG scorer in the league, and although standstill creation is important, his strengths lie more in his all-time level play-finishing & processing as a passer. Have him set a bunch of screens where he can create advantages for his ball-handler, pop for threes, and perhaps best of all, catch off the short roll and finish advantages off from there with his polished passing & decision-making. Let him operate out of the high-post and set up DHO's, or find cutters. And when the match up presents itself, feed him in the low-post. He was so skilled here at Duke, and has the brute strength for it to be a part of his NBA diet. Check the third bullet under Boozer's "strengths." He's a shot quality CHEAT CODE! As long as you're not overly relying on his limited standstill creation, he's going to be an incredible source of team efficiency on the offensive end that can fit into pretty much any ecosystem. Defensively, Boozer has his limitations. His rim protection isn't super impactful, as I feel his preference to play off of two feet and lack of athletic traits makes it difficult for him to cover ground, rise up, and contest rim attempts. And you'll see a fair share of reps defending ball-handlers on the perimeter where Boozer opens his hips and doesn't have the lateral quickness to stay attached. With all this being said, I feel Boozer projects as a neutral defender thanks to his hands, positioning, and processing. He'll poke balls free (79th percentile steal%), hardly suffer rotation breakdowns, and has the strength to handle pretty much any post-up thrown at him. And he's going to inhale every defensive board in his vicinity and flip it into offensive pace with his special outlet passing. And regarding his struggles defending the ball in space, it's not as if he's some complete lost cause.
