ADAY MARA

ADAY MARA
Aday Mara is a lengthy 7'3 rim protector who holds all the tools to grow into a much better basketball player.
// EXECUTIVE_SUMMARY
Mara is a very intriguing prospect. Looking back at his time on the U18 circuit in Europe, I found myself very underwhelmed. He was fundamentally messy, soft on the boards, and more times than not, found himself out of position on offensive plays. Two good things I did notice while watching is #1: He has great vision. #2: He can deter/shutdown offense at the rim. People chalk it up to him being 7'3 with a 7'7 wingspan, but these are two things that I felt came natural for him. You can tell he was very raw while in Europe, but ever since he has gotten to the states, he has done nothing but be impactful at both UCLA and Michigan. He has improved in every faucet of his game, whether it be finishing at the rim or rebounding. There is still much to be desired, but he is still young at only 21 years old, and he has all the tools to develop into an All-Star caliber big at the next level.
// OFFENSIVE_EVALUATION
Mara is a good, not great offensive player at the moment. His frame allows him to be a dominant lob threat in the post and on the move, but the lack of physicality when working around the rim is a concern. I'm not saying he isn't physical at all, but at 7'3 and 240 pounds, you expect more. He also doesn't space the floor very well. He can hit the three ball on occasion, but it isn't something that an NBA franchise should expect out of him. The biggest offensive turnoff when it comes to Mara is the poor free throw shooting. He shoots around 55%, which means he isn't able to convert and-1s or 2 shot opportunities enough. As centers in the NBA have developed over time, free throw shooting has become a pivotal point of development to take advantage of fouls at the rim. If your not finishing at a high rate, you have to be able to convert at the line, and Mara has not shown a consistent ability to do that yet. Shooting aside, Mara is a great rebounder and facilitator of the basketball. He does a pretty good job at high pointing the ball when it comes off the rim/backboard, and he has gotten gradually better at boxing out. His frame also allows him to snatch boards over players. He creates second-chance opportunities for guys on the outside, running downhill, or he will put it back up himself. He doesn't average that many boards, but that is in most part to Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson Jr. being monsters on the boards. My favorite aspect of Maras offensive game is his passing. He has great vision and touch for a guy of his size. He is able to understand what is happening on the floor when the ball is in his hands, and he has shown the ability to deliver dimes in traffic. He is dangerous when throwing to open players on the perimeter as well, generating 3 point opportunities as he draws double teams. Overall, Mara is great around the rim and when passing, but his lack of shooting is something teams should take note of.
// DEFENSIVE_EVALUATION
Mara can be both a nightmare and liability on defense. Mara is one of the best rim protectors in the nation, averaging almost 3 blocks a game and overall being a nuisance to deal with in and around the paint. He can deter shots at the rim, force untimely passes, and bad shots. His frame allows him to contest anyone in front of him, and he is a pivotal piece of Michigan's defensive puzzle. Although he can be a game-wrecker, he also lacks ability in other areas. He isn't great on the perimeter, and he can find himself allowing catch and shoot 3s on occasion. His frame usually makes up for this, but this is something that can be taken advantage of at the next level. He isn't quick, which can lead to him getting beat around the rim. The pick and roll defense is also questionable, as he finds himself out of position during switch situations or again, he will just get beat to the rim. His length does do him a massive favor, as he is still able to contest shots even if he is late to the ball. Overall, he is a great defensive player but he will always be limited due to his lack of overall athleticism. Expect an impactful rim protector but not much else.
// PROJECTION
Overall, I expect Mara to step into the league day 1 as an defensive lob threat who can pass the ball. As his basketball career continues, he should be able to develop into a more physical player around the rim, and hopefully he builds the shot some more. I expect him to be an impactful player for whichever team calls his name on draft night.
