DARRYN PETERSON

DARRYN PETERSON
With quite possibly the highest all-around ceiling standing at 6'5" Darryn Peterson is a prospect with ridiculous potential on both sides of the ball. On offence Peterson has exceptional off ball ability to get open, paired with ridiculous shot making skill and will to get to the rim. An exceptional athlete Peterson has the defensive instincts to generate stocks at a high level along with great aggressiveness. Playmaking remains an issue with Peterson and his 1.0 A/T ratio is at the very least alarming as well as the plethora of health issues regarding full body cramps causing him to miss 11 games.
Has a similar shot diet like Devin Booker but is a better athlete. I see a little bit of Donovan Mitchell mixed in too, if the defense comes around he can be a serious All-NBA caliber guy.
Wizards Beal was a damn good player and Peterson shows similarities with the former all-star although he is a better defender than Beal was at his age. Bradley Beal is a realistic median comp for Peterson in both playstyle and impact.
Possible floor is prime O.J. Mayo.
// OFFENSIVE_EVALUATION
An exceptional athlete Peterson has an immaculate ability to get open and is extremely effective in off-ball scenarios due to his gifted explosiveness and speed. Not only does he create separation when the ball isn't in his hands Peterson has proven that he can separate as a ball-handler and has good body control and change of pace when he has possession. An elite scorer Peterson can make any shot from anywhere on the court. His explosiveness and aggressiveness allow him to get to the rim and the short midrange at will, Peterson also possesses understanding of how to draw fouls which gets him to the line consistently. Peterson truly wastes no motion, if he feels that he is even an inch open he does not hesitate to shoot off-platform, pull-up or catch-and-shoot shots which he makes at a great percentage. A gifted 3-point shooter, Peterson shoots at a high volume (14.2 attempts per 100 possessions) which he makes at an equally high percentage (38.2%). His combination of off-ball separation and shooting is considered his calling card and his greatest strength which makes Peterson a multi-dimensional threat. Peterson also has a valuable weapon in a midrange jumper which he makes at a fine percentage too. The one although persistent knock on Peterson as an offensive prospect is his lack of playmaking. Peterson's A/T ratio at 1.0 is at the very least alarming, he does not show a lot of high-end promise as a passer and playmaker and can at times panic when he feels two or three opposing players crash on him. Peterson is also prone to preventable turnovers caused by lazy passes and sometimes settles for tougher shots than he needs to (truth be told he does still make them), his finishing around the rim could be better as well. Overall the positives far outweigh the negatives due to Peterson truly being an elite 3-level threat with the ability to get the line consistently which bodes well for him entering the modern NBA.
// DEFENSIVE_EVALUATION
As well as being a threat on offense Peterson shows great promise defensively. Possessing great defensive instincts combined with great hands Peterson generates stocks at a ridiculous level, very rarely do such great prospects on offense possess such ability to actively track and jump passing lanes as well as find the ball on defense. Peterson is an aggressive defender as well as an elite athlete, but Peterson also possesses a good instinct for when to double and when to switch on defense. When playing defense on-ball he is equally as nasty to play against but he truly shines in off-ball scenarios. Although he has great instincts to generate turnovers Peterson is at times prone to falling asleep on defense, losing concentration or just at times does not show eagerness on the defensive end. All in all Peterson's defensive ceiling differentiates him from other elite prospects such as Boozer and Dybantsa and quite possible make him the all-around highest ceiling player in the draft.
// PROJECTION
As previously stated Peterson quite possibly has the highest ceiling out of all the prospects in the 2026 draft class. Very rarely do we have such a player who excels at getting to the restricted area as well as possessing elite three-point shot making ability, but his ceiling as a defender is just as high. Peterson although possessing such obvious gifts has some pretty big questions to address. Missing 11 games due to full body cramps and other injuries as well as having a noticeably worse MIN% than other prospects may rub some people the wrong way. His playmaking is going to need to get better on the next level if Peterson wants to reach his ceiling as an offensive player. Sky is truly the limit for Peterson and I wouldn't at all be surprised if he does go number 1 depending on which team has the luxury of picking there. In the NBA Peterson has the ceiling of an All-NBA caliber player and is a clear franchise guy in my opinion, even if he never reaches those heights of being a top 10 player or if something is to go very very wrong his defensive instincts and shooting, as well as his athleticism give him a solid floor for him to be at the very minimum a solid two-way player in the league.
Percentiles are positional, measured against NBA players' last season in college.
