DARRYN PETERSON

DARRYN PETERSON
An elite shot maker and plus defender, who has potential to become an elite lead guard for a franchise for years to come. But had a disjointed season at Kansas that has raised durability questions and concerns about his creation upside.
// OFFENSIVE_EVALUATION
Prior to arriving at Kansas, was an on the ball lead guard who shouldered the scoring and playmaking role and did so at an elite level. A lot of mid-range and in between shots, putting pressure on the rim, drilling threes, getting to the free throw line. He was NPOY. This season offensively at Kansas he was placed in an off-ball role for a couple of reasons, that can be summed up to how the roster was constructed and his availability for most of the season being up in the air. In this off-ball role, the shot making prowess was there. Drilling threes off of the catch in spot up situations, shooting off of screens w/ movement, and catching and going into a couple of dribbles and rising and firing from three. Not shy at all to get up threes (14.2 3PA/100 - 94%tile). This does lead into some of the concerns with his game. The cramping in the quads/strained hamstring/ankle sprain, all effected first his availability in the lineup and second his ability to move on the floor. There wasn't a ton of donwhill substance, did not get downhill like expected - 27 %tile RIM%, he did flash the downhill ability in some outings and that is buoyed by a 2.5 UA RIM/100 - 71 %tile. In those moments of downhill burst and proficiency, it was special. Que the dunk, and switch hand layup against BYU. But there are some struggles finishing at the rim that aren't attributed to health. That needs to improve. Playmaking was of note because of the lack thereof when it comes to how many assists were recorded. Playmaking is better than what will be told, roster functionality played a part, the in and out of the lineup seemingly affected rhythm as well. Looking at the 97th %tile OBPM and LOAD, 99th %tile OBPM+, and 90th %tile CTOV% keep me reeled in here in terms of the ceiling as an offensive player. I do think he needs to clean up the rim efficiency and pick spots better in the mid-range area all things considered though.

// DEFENSIVE_EVALUATION
Defensively, stepped up and showed to be a plus defender on and off the ball. Has the foot speed and stop to start ability to stay in front and show his body and hands to contest and bother the ball. He also does have a bit of length with his wingspan and lead to him getting his hands on the ball, getting steals poking at ball handlers and getting into passing lanes in help, and getting blocks. Off ball, there are times where he's able to read actions and force turnovers or bother shots or make the offensive player think for an extra beat. Other times he can turn the motor off and get caught up ball watching. Also plays with a higher center of gravity and he is a bit of a handsy defender and that can get him in trouble when faced with pure speed. This makes me not believe in POA defense ability, but an above average defender. - 92nd %tile DBPM, 2,9 STL% (83rd %tile), 2.3% BLK% (79th %tile), -1.2 DEF 2P (94th%), -1,7 DEF PPP (60th %tile)
